2012 Grammy Controversy (2/14/12)

30 Sep

Controversy over the Grammy Association deciding to cut quite a few award categories from the ballot; many artists were outside the celebrations protesting. Of these categories were latin jazz, contemporary jazz, Cajun, Native American, Hawaiian, and other world music. Quite obviously the association is being criticized as to their intentions. While many of the deleted categories pertain to multicultural audiences sparking disdain from those groups and organizations, the other side of the coin is that the awards ceremony is becoming bigger and bigger every year thus requiring more stage performances by big names. The bad thing about this is that award categories must be given up from televised time. Robert Sax, spokesperson for Grammy Watch who is fighting to bring the categories back, states “At a time when the U.S. is becoming more and more diverse musically, the Grammys should reflect that, but when you cut off the roots of ethnic categories, you are doing the opposite.”
